Flagstaff, Arizona is a crisp mountain town that will invigorate you. The city offers a distinctive perspective on the diverse landscapes of Arizona—it’s neighbored by alpine forests as well as parched deserts. Even the Grand Canyon is nearby. Just don’t overlook the charms of Flagstaff itself; with a multitude of restaurants, shops and things to do, you’ll need a Discovery Map to find your way.

At 7,000 feet elevation, Flagstaff is a cool mountain town surrounded by Arizona desert. A flagpole made of Ponderosa pine was erected to celebrate the July 4th Centennial celebration, and Flagstaff got its name. Soon thereafter, the railway pushed through and Flagstaff became the hub of northern Arizona.

Today, the community retains its small town charm. The historic downtown was built around the railway, and the town grew around what would become Route 66. The Visitor Center is located in the 1926 train station, and most of the stone buildings remain from the turn of the twentieth century, now housing quaint shops and restaurants.

While in Flagstaff, take some time to learn about those who have lived here over the centuries by visiting the Museum of Northern Arizona, Riordan Mansion State Park, and the Pioneer Museum. Imagine what life might have been like at Wupatki or Walnut Canyon ruins, and envision the eruptions that caused Sunset Crater, once a mighty volcano.

Head north to visit Arizona Snowbowl for great skiing in the winter months. In summer, partake of incredible views that stretch as far as the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, and beyond. Visit the arboretum to learn what grows in this seasonal environment. Enjoy unparalleled views of the stars at Lowell Observatory, thanks to Flagstaff's designation as "The World's First International Dark-Sky Community."

Even after all these years, it still makes sense to use Flagstaff as the hub of your explorations around northern Arizona, a region rich in fascinating culture and beautiful scenery.
