John Lynch founded the City of Lynchburg as a result of his establishment of a ferry service on the James River. The village at Lynch's Ferry had become an important trade center by the end of the American Revolution. Lynch established a town overlooking the ferry site and in 1786 a charter was granted and Lynchburg, Virginal was formed.
