Lynchburg's rich cultural history and enduring Civil War legacy provide travelers with an array of appealing attractions. Memorials and museums in Lynchburg offer tourists ideal opportunities for learning about the country's cultural and Confederate histories. The National D-Day Memorial along Route 460, the Legacy Museum of African-American History, and the Old City Cemetery Museums and Arboretum all provide visitors with profound history lessons. Landmarks are scattered throughout Lynchburg, including Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, the third president's octagonal summer retreat. Appomattox Court House and National Historical Park
